The Dussehra is being celebrated since last 127 years in the Village Mahil Gahila, but until 2004, there was no permanent committee or organization for the management of the event. On the eve of The Dussehra, some villagers organized the events of Ram Leela.
As per the requirement, a 21 member committee named 'Ram Lila Welfare Committee' was formed on 11-Oct-2005 through a general meeting and was also duly registered under The Registration Act 1860, on 15-Dec-2005 wide registration No. 657. For the handling the monetary transactions, one account was also opened in Punjab National Bank in the name of the committee. At that time, the non-availability of its own Dussehra ground was the main problem of the committee that caused much inconvenience in the celebrations every year. So the committee requested the then Deputy Commissioner (D.C.), Nawanshahr, Honorable Sh. Krishan Kumar (I.A.S.) for providing a permanent Dussehra ground to the committee. Within a few days, as per the orders of the D.C., the then Sarpanch S. Surjeet Singh by passing a resolution in the Gram Panchayat allotted a vacant land behind the grain market (Dana Mandi) to the committee for the Dussehra ground. For this act of kindness the committee is and will always be thankful to the D.C., Sarpanch and the Gram Panchyat.
The committee also passed a resolution for organizing free medical camp for the poor people. Owing to the resolution, the first free medical camp was organized on 11-Feb-2006 and followed by the second one on 11-Feb-2007, in which 10 specialist Doctors, 20 nurses and other helpers actively participated. ‘Guru Nanak Mission Hospital’ Dhaha Kalera made a big contribution in the success of the camp. About 700 patients got treatment in this camp. Free medicine and 350 spectacles were also given to all the patients. Several eye operations were also performed. Many volunteers also donated the blood. Since then, the free medical camps are being organized every year in the month of January. For the last two year the camps have been organized twice in a year. The committee also helps in the arrangements of the marriages of the destitute girls. Such girls are also given the domestic items such as furniture, utensils, clothes, ornaments etc. worth Rs.51,000/-
The committee also runs a free Tailoring and Stitching Training Center for the girls. The needy girls are also given sewing machines by committee. The committee also honours the students getting first, second and third positions in the examination and the boys and girls performing some exceptional or extra-ordinary social work are also honoured at the functions of Dussehra. A permanent stage has also been constructed for the Ram Lila and other cultural programs in the Dussehra ground with the help of the present Sarpanch Sh. Yashpal Singh Mahil. Presently a Chhinj Mela (Kushti Mukabla) is also being organized in the Dussehra ground. In other times this ground is also used by the children for playing games like cricket, football etc. The cemented seating benches have also been constructed on the boundary of the ground for the old persons to sit and enjoy the delightful festivals. The committee is also thankful and will always remain thankful to Sarpanch Sh. Yashpal Singh Mahil, the Gram Panchayat and the villager for their support and help in every field.
A holy procession is also organized by committee on the eve of Ram Lila with great pleasure. This holy procession originates from Ram Kutia Smadh under the supervision of Acharya Sh. Siya Ram and takes a round through the whole village.
